Brake fluid for a smooth complexion?

Brake fluid! What do you mean – brake fluid for a smooth complexion? You think I’m going to put brake fluid on my face?”

No… that is, not labeled “brake fluid”. On the other hand–

Here’s a question for you: Do you use a moisturizer on your face?

Do you have a way to check the ingredients in that moisturizer? (They used microscopic print on jar labels but perhaps you can go online to the company website and enter a search for your product’s name + ingredients.)

Here’s a shortcut for you: 99 times out of 100, your moisturizer will contain propylene glycol just like your brake fluid. This ingredient is used because it creates a smooth-textured cream or lotion that won’t turn yucky in the jar, especially on hot days.

The problem is not that propylene glycol is used in both types of products. The government does not consider propylene glycol “toxic” – merely “unfit for human consumption” which hasn’t prevented it from being used freely in your toothpaste, your shampoo and your skin care products.

The immediate problem is that when it is added to your moisturizer, propylene glycol actually prevents that moisturizer from doing your face any good.

You bought the finest moisturizer you could find. The ingredients are the finest moisturizing ingredients available, designed to add the precious moisture that makes skin cells plump and smooth. The cells drink in the moisture – and along comes the propylene glycol to suck it out again.

Sploop on your cream or lotion more frequently to counteract the dryness — and what happens? The propylene glycol is right there to slurp it right up. Experience has shown that the oftener you apply your moisturizer, the drier your face becomes.

Back to our original question. A splash of brake fluid for a smooth complexion? When you use a moisturizer, 99 times out of 100 you won’t really have a choice.
